Thank you so much to Dwight Elementary School! I loved visiting your school and it was very beneficial. I had not been in a fourth grade classroom yet so it was a great first time experience for me. The students in Mrs. Storm's room were so intelligent. Mrs. Storm modeled the organizer that they were to complete on their own and then we teamed up with the kids to work on it. The students in this room were reading a chapter book and looking at the different character traits within it. I loved seeing how the older students thought through things. Again, thank you to all the teachers and faculty who made this possible! It was a great experience for me personally. Briana Beaton
A big thanks to the entire staff and faculty at Dwight Elementary who made us feel so welcome and letting us sit in for a portion of your day. I gained a lot sitting in on the language arts lesson in my particular fourth grade class. If you ever need help with anything please feel free to contact me for I'd love to get back in your school:) thanks again! Lindsey Werner
Thank you for letting us sit in during your classes! I had never experienced a fourth grade classroom during my time at Tech until we came to your school. I really enjoyed getting to see how fourth grade goes about reading lessons! It was super beneficial. Thank you!
Thank you so much Dwight Elementary!!! I really enjoyed being able to experience being in a fourth grade classroom. Thank you to all of the teachers who took the time to allow us to be a part of your classrooms. It really means a lot to all of us to know that there are teachers who are more than willing to allow us to learn while observing in their classrooms. I enjoyed working with the students while they made connections throughout "Shiloh" and this experience was very beneficial. Again, thank you all so much for allowing this experience to happen!
Thank you so much for letting us come into your schools and your classrooms! I have never been placed in an upper level elementary class, so it was really interesting and fun to observe. I got to observe Mrs. Hart's class. The students were so well behaved! I enjoyed getting to watch the reading groups as they read and discussed "Shiloh". I really appreciate your teachers to taking the time to have us in their class!
Thank you Dwight Elementary for allowing our class to come and observe your fourth grade rooms! This was a beneficial experience for us because we are able to see different ways a literacy program can function. I loved watching the students break up into groups and discuss their text in Mrs. Ferren's classroom! We were able to work one on one with a student while they searched for a change in the characters with text support. This was very interesting to speak with the students and understand their thought process. Again thank you so much for this experience!
Thank you to Mrs. Binz who allowed our ECED Language and Literacy class to come in and observe with her fourth grade team. Also, a special thank you to Mrs. Ferren and the rest of the fourth grade team for taking the time out of their day to present and allow us to experience their literacy program. I must say that though half of Mrs. Ferren’s class was gone, the students that were there were so well mannered and seemed highly motivated to learn. Being able to see how Mrs. Ferren worked with her students and then having the opportunity to work with a student one-on-one was a very beneficial experience. Thank you again Dwight fourth grade team, your kindness and generosity is so appreciated.
Thank you so much Dwight Elementary!!!!! Having the opportunity to come into your school was an awesome opportunity for my colleagues and I. I personally have not observed in a grade level higher than third, so getting to sit in on a fourth grade class during their literacy time was a beneficial experience to me. A special thank you to Mrs. Ferren, even though half of the class was out sick, she accommodated her usual schedule to benefit her students who were there.I loved how every student was provided with the opportunity to share their thoughts, in whole group and small group. The students were so intelligent in the ways they expressed themselves through the book "Shiloh". I absolutely enjoyed it, thank you again!
Thank you Mrs. Binz for allowing ECED 3283 to come and observe Mrs. Storm, Mrs. Ferren, or Mrs. Hart’s classroom. In Mrs. Harts classroom, where I observed, I saw how Mrs. Hart used several strategies to guide the students in their thinking. As a whole class they were reading, “Love that Dog” by Sharon Creech. Mrs. Hart guided in questions, but the students took the charge in discussion, by commenting respectfully with other students. Then after whole group, the students broke off into their peer groups where they read one chapter in “Shiloh” by Phyllis Naylor. In the peer group the students took turns reading. At the end of the chapter the students discussed what they thought was a contrast or contradiction in that chapter of the book. This was a great learning opportunity for me to see how a piece of her literacy program works. I enjoyed the experience! Thank you again to the fourth grade team and to Mrs. Binz for allowing us to observe in the classroom!
Friday I was in Mrs. Harts classed and watched her participate in guided reading with her students. Before beginning she explained that she had a lot of students missing so it was going to look a little different than normal. They started their reading time in a circle on the floor. Mrs. Hart read the chapter for the day and the students were to flag sections that they thought contradicted from the previous chapters. After reading the students turned to their shoulder partners and explained what they flagged and why. While the students were sharing, Mrs. Hart was walking around and listening or talking with each group. I really liked how she was on their level and wasn’t afraid to sit on the floor or be a part of their conversation. Some of the students then shared what they flagged and other students were allowed to comment whether they agreed or disagreed. The students then divided up into reading groups and spread out across the room. The students then read a chapter of the book Shiloh with each other taking turns on pages. Once they finished reading they discussed the surprising twist at the end that took place. This was a very student led activity that was nice to be a part of. I think sometimes we forget that students can lead their discussions and are capable of staying on task. Mrs. Hart walked around during this time and made sure the students were reading and joined their discussion at the end. I really enjoyed sitting in on Mrs. Hart’s class and watching this time. As I said earlier, I felt like she did a really great job of working alongside them and not just lecturing. I loved that she sat on the floor with them and was always talking to them on their level.
Mrs. Binz and fourth grade teachers, thank you for allowing our Language and Literacy class to observe in your classrooms. This was a great learning experience for myself as well as my classmates since many of us have not been given the opportunity to work in the fourth grade during our past observation experiences. I observed in Mrs. Hart's classroom and really enjoyed it. The students and Mrs. Hart gathered on the carpet and read a portion of "Love That Dog". After reading, they identified contrasts and contradictions in the characters. The students were very eager to share their ideas and really seemed to enjoy learning. After working as a whole class, they separated into small groups and took turns reading "Shiloh". The students in my group discussed the book as they read it and came to an agreement about what they would write on their contrast and contradictions worksheet that they were filling out. After working in small groups, they moved back to the carpet and discussed the chapter as a whole group. Mrs. Hart informed us beforehand that her class normally reads the chapters silently to themselves and then go to their groups for discussion; however, she modified the routine so that we would be able to observe the entire process. I was really impressed with how well the students communicated with each other and conveyed their ideas about the books. Overall, I really enjoyed this experience and I now have a better understanding of how to structure a guided reading program for older elementary students. Again, thank you all so much for the opportunity to work in your school and classrooms!
It was so nice to finally get to experience Dwight Elementary. My younger sister attended there and she always told me her time there was wonderful, I'm glad I can have my own experience there to back that statement up! I want to thank all the teachers there, particularly Mrs. Storm for letting my group and I into her classroom. I was always anxious when I thought about how to approach a fourth grade classroom, but now that I've gotten a glimpse of it in Mrs. Storm's class, I can say that that environment is so welcoming! I hope I can have that with my own class someday. I appreciated Mrs. Storm trusting us with her kids and letting us help them out by reading the chapter with them and helping them comprehend character traits. That's the kind of activities that we as ECED preservice teachesr really need to be familiar with since interaction with the students is something that just cannot be taught in a Tech classroom. I'm so glad that we got to do it with all the wonderful teachers and students at Dwight. I wish everybody there a great rest of the year, and I wish the school I get to teach in is a great as Dwight!
I was so excited to get to come back to Dwight Elementary! I observed in a kindergarten class here last semester and the children were awesome! In this visit, I got to observe Mrs. Storm's fourth graders! When we first walked in, they were doing a brain break with dancing. I joined in and the students were really engaged! Mrs. Storm demonstrated how to find information to support a character trait of the main character in their chapter book and then allowed us to pair up with a few students to help them find some examples of their own. It was a great experience to see the difference in the thought process and the level of difficulty these fourth graders were working at compared to the lower grades. Mrs. Storm modeled in a way that helped me see that fourth graders don't need as much information to get the job done! Thank you so much Dwight Elementary for allowing us to come in and observe with you amazing staff and students!
Thank you so much, Ms. Hart, for letting us come into your classroom to observe guided reading! Your students are definitely passionate about the book, Shiloh, and I loved getting to hear their thoughts and predictions of the book. I liked how you got on their level on the floor to read the story with them instead of higher up in a chair. The lesson was simple but letting the students guide their own learning was an important feature of the lesson. Thank you again for letting us come in to watch your class! I hope you have a great rest of the year!
Thank you Dwight fourth grade team for taking the time out of your day to foster our learning. Also, a special thank you to Mrs. Ferren and her class to allow us to experience their literacy program. The students were so knowledgeable and well behaved. Getting the hands on experience with group discussions as well as finding character traits, has given me so many ideas and strategies to use in lesson plans, as well as my future classroom. Mrs. Binz, you have a wonderful school and such great kids. Again, I am very appreciative for the time spent in you school.
Thank you Dwight Elementary school for letting us come and visit! It was very beneficial to see how Mrs. Hart ran her reading group. I had not been in a 4th grade classroom, so it was interesting to see how the group was ran. I liked how Mrs. Hart modeled how the students were to answer the questions and search for information within the book. I now know how to create guided reading lessons for upper elementary. Mrs. Hart did a great job modeling for the students, then letting them work in groups. She was there when the students needed her, but she did not give the students the answers to the questions. She gave them clues if they needed them, but in the end the students had to search for all of the information themselves. It was great to get hands on experience while working with a specific group. The group that I was in did a great job finding the contrast and contradictions in the book Shiloh. The students in the group knew how to search for the contrasts and contradictions because of the modeling Mrs. Hart did.
Thank you again for allowing our Language and Literacy class to come and observe a literacy lesson. It was extremely beneficial and I learned new information that will help me as a future teacher.
Thank you to the staff and especially the 4th grade team at Dwight Elementary School. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the literacy program in Mrs. Storm's room. I felt like our group got the most out of this experience because we were able to work one on one with students. It gave us a little bit of insight as to how this will run in our internship and throughout our career as teachers. I feel like I have some great experience under my belt to create lesson plans and someday run a literacy program of my own. Once again, thank you to staff at Dwight Elementary School for allowing our class to come visit.
This experience was very nice to watch the guided & independent reading going on in the class room. I liked the idea of students flagging information in their book. After the guided reading to talk about the flagged information, the whole class discussed the information. I enjoyed this experience and the idea of flagging.
